Animal Being is an investigation that takes a closer look at our connection with other animals, in relation to human development and growth.

Animal Being drops into the conversation and the experience between the human and animal world, and again deeper into the struggles for freedom, ethical surrealities and surges of wild vitality.

Animal Being, a performance, envelops us in these odd, often invisible dramas with humour, reminiscence and the gentle question:

might there be other ways?

Animal Being is part of a larger artistic and personal project of a dance and performing artist Jonna Lehto, whose childhood was coloured by her family’s work with the domesticated animals. For this investigation she invited DJ Bráulio Bandeira aka Deepneue, visual designer Sofia Palillo and textile artist Moa Larsdotter Persson. The project started year 2020 and has since been actualized in various forms across Finland. Two artist residencies: at the Live Art Society and at Villa Lill Kallvik giving space to process; as a performance at Pixelache Helsinki 2021, and as body-based workshops exploring our personal relationships with other animals, in Helsinki and in Tampere.

The working group finds that delving into questions of ethics and economy in the animal trade, as well as the human-animal relationship, as innovative and of high importance in the current state of our world. We consider art as a potential forum to negotiate where we can take this world and who we want to become in it.

Animal Being on tutkinta, joka tarkastelee lähemmin yhteyttämme muunlajisiin eläimiin suhteessa ihmisen kehitykseen ja kasvuun.

Animal Being putoaa meidän ja eläinmaailman väliseen keskusteluun ja kokemukseen, ja taas syvemmälle kamppailuihin vapauden puolesta, eettisiin surrealiteetteihin ja villin elinvoiman kuohuihin.

Animal Being ympäröi meidät näillä oudoilla, usein näkymättömillä tarinoilla, kera huumorin, muistojen ja lempeän kysymyksen: Olisiko olemassa muita tapoja?

Animal Being on osa laajempaa tanssi- ja esitystaiteilija Jonna Lehdon taiteellista ja henkilökohtaista projektia. Lehdon lapsuutta väritti hänen sukunsa työskentely tuotantoeläinten parissa. Tähän tutkimukseen hän on kutsunut mukaan DJ Bráulio Bandeiran aka Deepneuen, visuaalisen suunnittelijan Sofia Palillon ja tekstiilitaiteilijan Moa Larsdotter Perssonin. Projekti sai alkunsa vuonna 2020, jonka jälkeen työskentely on tapahtunut eri muodoissa. Kahdessa taiteilijaresidenssissä: Esitystaiteen seurassa ja Villa Lill Kallvikissa tilaresidensseinä, esityksenä Pixelache Helsinki 2021 festivaalilla ja keholähtöisinä eläinsuhdettamme tutkivina työpajoina Helsingissä ja Tampereella.

Animal Being työryhmä uskoo, että syventyminen eläimiin kohdistuviin eettisiin ja taloudellisiin kysymyksiin sekä ihmisten ja eläinten väliseen suhteeseen on elävöittävää ja erittäin tärkeää maailman nykyisessä tilassa. Pidämme taidetta mahdollisena keskustelufoorumina, jossa pohtia, minne haluamme tämän maailman kuljettaa ja minkälaisiksi haluamme tulla tässä maailmassa.

Animal Being is a body-based performance where individual freedom, resistance, ethical hiccups and longing for vitality within our interconnectedness are rolling through the space. An embodied self-reflective process wanders through our kinship with other animals to grow our sense of belonging and reveal wider matrices of connection to our allyship. Animal Being unravels and invites us to redreaming new narratives and connections while playing with authenticity and the phenomena of memory.
